Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, and other key stakeholders, led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, took a bold step towards recreating their political platform, the Labour Party, on Wednesday.
In a move aimed at putting an end to the party’s crisis since the controversial National Convention held in a hotel room in Nnewi, Anambra state by the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, the sole Labour Party Governor of Abia state and the party’s National Leader Obi decided to take the bull by the horns by summoning an enlarged National Executive Committee, NEC of the party in Umuahia where a far-reaching decision was made to give direction to the party.
In a statement signed by Dr Yunusa Tanko, POMR Spokesman, former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, was nominated to head an interim National Working Committee, NWC, with a 90-day mandate to organise congresses at all levels of the party, including a National Convention to elect substantive party officers.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha, former Senate Minority Leader, will serve as Secretary to Senator Usman’s 29-member transition committee.
The well-attended meeting also included Obi’s Presidential running mate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmad, Deputy Governor of Abia State, all elected Labour Legislators at the national and state levels, as well as the party’s gubernatorial candidates in the 2023 elections.
Senator Nenadi promised to work with her team to ensure the party’s unity and growth during her acceptance speech.
The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR), has been besieged by Labour Party supporters across the country, demanding and applauding the long-awaited move.
They also noted that this bold political move came 48 hours after the appointment of a National Coordinator for the Obedient Movement, a key component of the Labour Party advocating for their leader, Peter Obi,’s Presidential ambition.
